I am running the shop “Bag Atelier You-hou” in Izushi, Hyogo-pref., Japan. You-hou means playing with bags. At our shop, you can produce your only-1-in-the-world original leather bag by yourselves. We started to provide this “self-handiwork experience of an original leather bag” service since 2013. By now, over 20,000 customers made their own original bags or original small leather goods. Our new atelier shop “You-hou 01” will be open in April 2020. The shop concept is “to create the only one from the customer’s image zero”. Specifically, this shop is specific to provide a self-handiwork experience of only one original bag in which customers think of design for themselves. In 2019, my son and I started making an original satchel for my son who will start elementary school from next April. Why do I try such a complex bag? Because I promised myself to make it with my son if he could become 6 years old. My son was born very small, 753g 31cm. The doctor’s first words to me was “your son will be OK if he could live one week.” However, it was quite challenging as was our first time to produce a satchel, so we started from learning it. We started from learning the satchel framework by taking the old one, which the graduate gave us, to pieces. After all, my son grew big mentally and became very proud by completing quite a complex satchel. Also, our family tie became much stronger while we overcome the challenge and share really enjoyable time. Above all, we could not accomplish to finish creating it without cooperation from many companies and friends. Another effect was from our customer. While we are making a satchel at my shop, customers showed great interest that they would also like to produce it for their children or grandchildren. These requests made us to go on to the next challenge. Our next challenge is to provide this great challenging experience to you.
